The first industrial use of water jets can be traced back over 100 years when they were originally developed for use in the mining of gravel and clay deposits to blast material from the quarry face. However, the development of water jet systems, as we know them today, did not truly begin in earnest until the early 1960's, and it wasn't until the 1970's that the first useable systems began to appear.

In 1971 the very first commercially useable water jet cutting system was installed for the Alton Box Board Company, a cardboard box manufacturing facility. Known as the "Fluid Jet Cutting System", it eliminated the use of commercial saws, and was designed for the contour cutting of furniture packing forms for the Papertube Division in Jackson, TN, USA.

Nowadays, waterjet cutting is one of the fastest growing methods of profiling a huge array of materials, with machines typically operating at pressures of 60,000psi (4,000 bar). KMT Waterjet Systems Inc has recently introduced the Streamline PRO® 125 pump. Operating at pressures up to 90,000psi (6,200 bar) this development will allow faster cutting than with conventional systems.
